April Fool's Pierogies and Sausages

I don't know if you get in on the April Fool's day shenanigans at your place but we like to get pretty tricky around here. We went all out with our April Fool's A&W and KFC treats a while back and wanted to do something just as fun (and tasty, of course) this year.
I knew instantly when I made our Red Velvet Donut Fries with Cream Cheese Frosting that I was going to make something for April Fools Day with them. They just really really really looked like sausages.
I decided to use my Kitchen Mate Patty Trio to make some peanut butter sandwich "pierogies".

I rolled the bread out thin with a rolling pin before pressing it in the cutter. I then dabbed a few bits of cocoa powder on the outside using a small paint brush to make it looked cooked.
I used cashew halves to make the "fried mushrooms" ...

I also dabbed a little cocoa powder on them with a small paint brush to give them a cooked look.
Then I used white jelly beans to make the "fried onions"...

I squished the jelly bean with a rolling pin, then cut it into strips, then dabbed a little cocoa powder on a small paint brush and dabbed it randomly on the jelly bean strips.
I then placed the "mushroom" and "onion" strips on top of the "pierogies".

The "sausages" are simply a few of our Red Velvet Donut Fries. Nothing extra needed to be done to them.
They already look like sausages.
Go HERE to see how to make those. They are delicious, by the way. Even if you don't want to make an April Fools treat you should make them.
Just sayin'

So... in summary... here are the ingredients you will need to replicate our April Fool's Pierogies & Sausages: few cashew halves
3 - 4 white jelly beans
1 tsp of cocoa powder
few slices of Dempster's white bread
few Tbsps of peanut butter
Happy April Foolin'

Cheese Ball Carrots

I couldn't decide whether to post this for Easter or for April Fools' Day.
These cheese balls look sooooo cute!
And...they totally look like carrots. From a distance you could fool anybody, I'm sure of it.
I saw this idea over at She Wears Many Hats and knew I had to make it for the ladies at work.
I changed up the recipe a tad to suit what I had on hand so you can always visit She Wears Many Hats to find Amy Johnson's version.
This takes all of about 15 - 20 minutes from start to finish. Bring this to your Easter supper as a fun appetizer. I guarantee you will have everyone talking about what a creative genius you are.

Cheese Ball Carrots
(Adapted from She Wears Many Hats)

Ingredients
8 oz (1 brick) cream cheese, room temp
2 cups finely shredded, aged cheddar cheese
1/4 tsp paprika
1/4 tsp onion powder
1/4 tsp garlic powder
1/8 tsp cayenne pepper
2 Tbsp very finely minced onion
1 - 2 drops orange food coloring (optional)

Sprigs of fresh parsley for stems

Directions
Using a fork, smush all the ingredients together (except parsley) in a bowl until combined. Then use your hands to thoroughly mix the ingredients until smooth.

Divide the mixture into 7 to 9 sections, depending on how many carrots you want. Use your hands to roll these into elongated cone shapes (ie: carrot shapes). If it is too sticky to handle simply chill for half an hour or so to let firm up. No need to be perfect as real carrots are a bit bendy and such too.

Use a butter knife to lightly cut little lines into the shapes to resemble real carrots. Place on a serving platter.

Stick a sprig or two of parsley into the top of each carrot.

Cover and chill until ready to serve.
Serve with crackers.
You will want to shred your cheese as finely as possible. If you buy the pre-shredded cheese the pieces will be too big and will make your carrots look funny.
Same as the onion. Chop it as small as humanly possible. If you have big chunks then your carrots will be chunky and less realistic looking.
You don't have to use the food coloring if you prefer not to. They carrots do look orange without it BUT they look even more orange with it. Up to you!
Super simple.
Super cool.
Perfect for Easter or April Fools' Day.

April Fool's A&W and KFC

Sue and I had so much fun making some fast food April Fool's Day food. We had to share it with you!
We were inspired by Kitchen Fun with My 3 Sons incredibly creative food.

We made the macaroni for our A&W macaroni salad out of white Tootsie rolls and green and orange Starburst. Then stirred in a little vanilla pudding for the "mayo".

It was so realistic. We fooled mom & dad with it. :)

The chicken nuggets were Rice Krispie treats that we painted with melted white chocolate and dipped in crushed Cornflakes.

The fries were pound cake we cut with a crinkle cutter.

Our KFC chicken drumsticks are actually made with pretzel rods with 2 mini marshmallows stuck on the end and then dipped in white melting wafers. For the meat of the chicken we used Rice Krispies, painted with melted white chocolate and dipped in crushed Raisin Bran. We then painted a few large flakes and stuck them on top to make the crispy skin.

The baked beans are red and black jelly beans mixed into a little chocolate and vanilla pudding with a few drops of red food coloring.

They did look like kidney (baked) beans once they were in the sauce.

The chicken fingers are Rice Krispies painted with melted white chocolate and dipped in crushed Cornflakes. The BBQ Sauce is a little grape jelly.

The fries are, once again, pound cake cut with a crinkle cutter.

Sue and I were going to go into the local A&W with our A&W April Fool's food and say "Hey, there is something wrong with our meal. We want our money back." But, we didn't want to freak out some poor kid.
Instead, we took it to show off amongst some neighbors.
Hey, it was too cool not to share!
Did anyone pull any pranks on you this April Fool's?
