Red Velvet Donut Fries with Cream Cheese Dip


Need something a little out of the ordinary to make for Valentine's day?
Why not try our cute red velvet donut fries with cream cheese dip?
Okay, they are a little fussy to make but they are so worth the effort. You get about 7 - 8 dozen, they are delicious, they are red - so..you know...perfect for Valentine's day, and they are just so darn adorable. 
Plus...they're donuts. 
Donuts are awesome.


Red Velvet Donut Fries With Cream Cheese Dip

Ingredients
Donuts
1 egg
3/4 cup sugar
1 oz red food coloring
2 Tbsp butter, melted
1 1/4 cup buttermilk
1 Tbsp vinegar
2 tsp vanilla
1 tsp baking soda
4 cups flour
2 1/2 Tbsp baking cocoa (unsweetened)
1 tsp baking powder
pinch salt

enough oil for frying (~3 cups or so)

Cream Cheese Dip
1 (8 oz) brick cream cheese, softened
2 cups icing sugar
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 cup milk

Icing sugar for sprinkling, optional

Directions
Donuts - In a large bowl, whisk together egg, sugar, food coloring, and melted butter until well combined.
In a medium bowl, whisk together buttermilk, vinegar, vanilla, and baking soda. 
In another medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa, baking powder, and salt.


Whisk the buttermilk mixture into the red colored mixture until well combined.
Then stir the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until it forms a rather stiff dough. (If it is too stiff then add in a bit more buttermilk so it is pliable but not too sticky. If it is too sticky, add a bit more flour.)


Flour a flat work surface. Roll out dough to about 1/4 inch thickness.
Cut the dough into strips. Then cut the strips into "finger" sized sticks for the fries. You can make them as long as you like. (I think I went with about 3 - 4 inches on average.)


When you have the "fries" cut - cover the dough with a tea towel so it won't dry out while you heat your oil for frying. 
When oil has reached approx 350 degrees you are ready to go (don't let the oil go above 375).
Fry your donut fries about 6 - 8 at a time in the oil until starting to brown, about 1 - 2  minutes. 


Remove from oil using a slotted spoon and place on paper towel lined cookie sheet. (This helps to drain any excess oil off the donuts.)


Continue this process until all fries are cooked. While they are cooling you can prepare the cream cheese dip.
In a medium bowl, beat together cream cheese and icing sugar until smooth. Beat in the vanilla. Slowly beat in the milk a little at a time until it is completely added in. (If you add it too fast your dip may be lumpy.)


You can now serve the fries as is.....


Or sprinkle with a little icing sugar and then serve....


If you don't want to serve the cream cheese as dip then you can certainly just drizzle it over the donut fries when you serve them. Either way works and either way looks amazingly delicious. 
Definitely a pretty impressive Valentine's dessert if you have someone you want to impress. 
I made these for a bake sale and they sold right away.
