Pumpkin Dog Treats

Sue found this recipe over at Simmer Til Done and decided to make some for Kenzie's big, big puppy, Riggs.

He loved them. I decided to make a batch for my boyfriend's teeny tiny puppy, Izzy. Izzy also loved them.
I figure if both ginormous dogs and teeny tiny dogs enjoy these treats then they must go into the "keep" file. And, apparently, pumpkin is helpful for dogs with tummy troubles.
Whip up a batch of these tasty puppy treats for your pet for Christmas...hey, pets deserves treats too!

Pumpkin Dog Treats
(Slightly adapted from Simmer Til Done)

Ingredients
2 eggs
1/2 cup canned pumpkin
2 Tbsp dry milk
1/4 tsp sea salt
2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour

Directions
Preheat oven to 350. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.
In a large bowl, whisk together eggs and pumpkin until smooth. Whisk in dry milk and salt.
Using a wooden spoon, gradually stir in whole wheat flour to form a stiff, dry dough.

Roll out on a lightly floured surface to 1/4 - 1/2 inch thick. Use cookie cutters (or simply cut into sticks). Gather up scraps and re-roll them so you can cut out more treats.

Place on prepared cookie sheet. Bake at 350 for 20 minutes. Remove from oven and flip biscuits over. Bake another 20 minutes.
Allow to cool completely before serving.

Note - I made mini treats for Izzy. Because they were so tiny I only had to cook them for 15 minutes on each side.
The big treats I baked for 15 minutes on each side and then shut the oven off and let them sit in there for another 15 or 20 minutes. They should be crunchy, not soft.

The original recipe called for brown rice flour, which I did not have so I used whole wheat. I ended up having to use all purpose flour to roll them out as I then ran out of whole wheat. If you have brown rice flour, by all means use that instead, it is apparently better for some dogs digestion.

  2. A pumpkin treat? Wow! Not every dog eats veggies, you know. My dog is not a picky eater, it’s just that she prefers to eat beef and chicken, and sometimes veggies. No wonder, I guess. I don’t eat veggies much either and I guess she got that attitude from me.

  3. Should you refrigerate these afterwards? How long do they typically last? I made a huge batch of another recipe similar to this one & they lasted a week & molded. Maybe should have made less & refrigerated them?

  4. I think you should freeze the dough and bake as you need more treats. Since they are so dried...I'd think that they would hold up well in a cool spot.

    1. Thank you for your reply. For some reason I didn't see the above anon's questions (all the way back from January!). Geez!
You can definitely freeze these after baking them and just take them out of the freezer as needed too.
